Greetings! We hope you have had a great semester and a Happy Thanksgiving. Now for the push toward finals and the holidays.

The Communication Program’s first semester within American Studies has gone extraordinarily well. We have completed plans for changes within the current Communication Studies certificate program, and those changes are now being considered by the College of Arts and Science governance. You can examine the proposed changes at http://www.commstudies.umb.edu. The website also contains general information about Communication Studies, breaking news, and some very useful resources for communication study, including a rich platform for analysis of mass media.

News Notes

Ellen Hume, Martin Baron, and Ray Howell Highlight Inauguration Week Panel

As part of the festivities leading up to the inauguration of Chancellor JoAnn Gora, three experts on the relationship of mass media to public policy formulation presented a forum on that topic. Well known media analyst Ellen Hume, Boston Globe Editor Martin Baron, and Ray Howell, President of Howell Communications and formerly Press Secretary for Governor William Weld, conducted a lively discussion of the intricate ways in which print and broadcast media affect public opinion and policy, and in turn are affected by policy considerations. The Communication Studies Program helped in the planning of this forum, and looks forward to further ventures of a similar nature.

English Department Transfers English 106 to Communication Studies

Communication Studies now owns the Liberal Arts College’s major public speaking course, “Oral Communication.” To avoid disruption of printed materials, the course’s official designation will remain “English 106” until Summer 2003. As a result of this transfer of responsibility, we hope to offer the course frequently to enable more students to work on the critical skill of spoken communication.
