Greetings to students, alumni, and friends of the UMass Boston Communication Studies Program.
We hope your summer is going well.

Sheree Conrad to Direct Communication Studies

Dean Donna Kuizenga has selected Professor Sheree Dukes Conrad, Psychology, to direct the Communication Studies Program effective this coming September. Professor Conrad has been at UMass Boston since 1986. Her teaching and scholarly portfolio shows her great versatility, while at the same time demonstrating a record of great accomplishment related to Communication Studies. She has taught and written about the effects of mass communication, socialization, The Politics of Denial (an acclaimed book co-authored with Professsor Michael Milburn), 'sexual intelligence,' and other issues related to human communication.

We welcome Sheree Conrad!

(Former Director Mark Schlesinger is taking a leave of absence from the Boston Campus to assume the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Technology at the UMass President's Office. He will continue to teach a reduced load in the Program. You can visit Mark at 225 Franklin Street or email him: mschlesinger@umassp.edu.)

Student Awards

Two students have garnered this year's Communication Studies Awards. Kristen DeOliveira has won the Robert Risse Prize for superior performance in the Communication Studies Minor. Ms. DeOliveira. Ms. DeOliveira is a top student, and has been the News Editor of the student newspaper, "The Mass Media." The Convocation Award booklet credits her with moving from theory to application "and back again with a zest that inspires faculty and students alike."

A new award, sponsored by the Center of Media and Society, was offered to two students exhibiting achievement and promise in journalism befitting the award's namesake, the late David Nyhan, who was a great friend of the Program and the Center's first Fellow. Ms. DeOliveira was joined by Gin Dumcius, her predecessor as "Mass Media News Editor," spent the Spring Semester interning with the "Wall Street Journal," and has now returned to "The Mass Media."

We are very proud of Kristen and Gin. Congratulations and best wishes to both!
